Shalimar is the stretch of Del City north of SE 15th Street. The city's neighborhood watch lines put it between Bryant Avenue on the west and Sunnylane Road on the east, running up to the Tinker Diagonal. Shalimar Drive cuts through the middle of it, lined with modest homes, many of them built around 1961 on roomy lots.
It is a quiet, residential pocket of town, so most errands start the same way, with a drive south to SE 15th. Once you are on 15th, we are close. Head east, drop south on Sunnylane, and you land on SE 29th in about seven minutes, a little over two miles from Shalimar Drive.
That route takes you right past the Del City Community Center and down the same stretch of Sunnylane that the earliest Del City homes were built along. For a neighborhood that sits up near the Diagonal, it is a short, easy run.
Shalimar is boxed in by Bryant, Sunnylane, SE 15th and the Tinker Diagonal, so there are two good ways out: south on Sunnylane or south on Bryant. Sunnylane is usually the quicker one. Either way you end up on SE 29th, and we are a few blocks east of Sunnylane at 4715 SE 29th St, with parking on site.
Shalimar Drive meets SE 15th just east of Bryant Avenue. Turn left onto SE 15th and head east about a mile. On that stretch you pass Del City City Hall, then the Del City Library, then the Community Center just before Sunnylane. Turn right onto Sunnylane Road and drive about a mile south, past Del City High School. At SE 29th, turn left and continue a few blocks east. About seven minutes and 2.2 miles. SE 15th can be slow around five on weekdays, and by nine at night it is usually much lighter.
If you live up near the Diagonal, skip the cross streets and go straight for Sunnylane. Take the Diagonal over to Sunnylane Road, turn right and head south. You cross SE 15th and pass Del City High School before you reach SE 29th. Get into the left lane, turn left onto 29th, and go a few blocks east to 4715. Depending on how far north you start, figure six to eight minutes. This is the one we would pick late at night, since it keeps you on a single road almost the whole way.
From homes closer to Bryant, you can stay on the city's west edge instead. Take Bryant Avenue south across SE 15th and keep going about a mile to SE 29th. Turn left onto 29th and head east. You cross Sunnylane Road after about a mile, by the Walgreens on the corner, and we are a few blocks past it at 4715 SE 29th St. This one runs a little longer than the Sunnylane route, around eight to nine minutes, but it is handy when Sunnylane is busy around Del City High School.
Ray Trent Park sits on the Tinker Diagonal near Sunnylane, at the north end of Shalimar. Leave the park, turn right onto the Diagonal, and go about a third of a mile to Sunnylane Road. Turn left and head south about a mile and a half. You pass Braum's on the right along the way, then cross SE 15th and go by Del City High School. At SE 29th, turn left and drive east about six tenths of a mile, past Advance Auto Parts. We are on the north side of 29th just after Vickie Drive. Around seven minutes and 2.4 miles. It is one long road with only a few turns, which makes it easy to follow at night.
Eagle Lake Park is just across I-40 from Shalimar, on Reno Avenue. From the park, head west on Reno and turn left onto Scott Street. Follow Scott about half a mile south to the Tinker Diagonal, turn left, and almost right away bear left to merge onto I-40 East. Stay on the interstate a little over a mile and take Exit 155B toward Midwest City. At the bottom of the ramp, turn right onto Vickie Drive and follow it about a mile south. At SE 29th, turn left, and our lot is a few hundred feet down on the left. About seven minutes and 3.1 miles. It looks longer on a map than cutting through Shalimar, but the highway stretch skips every light on Sunnylane.
